Deut 8.11 “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God failing to observe His commands….(14) Then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God…(17) You may say to yourself ‘My power and the strength of my hands has produced the wealth for me,’ but remember the Lord your God, for it is he who give you the ability to produce wealth.”
There are two refrains repeated in this passage. The first, “do not forget the Lord your God.” The second, “your heart will become proud.” Knowing the human heart, God gently warns us to “Be careful,” because when “our gold increases,” the heart begins to grow distant from the things of God. We begin to worship ourselves and created things rather than the creator. We become prideful of our accomplishments and our treasure, forgetting that it is by his grace that we “have the ability to produce wealth.”
“For pride can get into the Christian’s heart as well as the sinners; it can delude us into dreaming that we are ‘rich and have acquired wealth, and do not need a thing.” (Charles Spurgeon)
Oh Christian heart, be mindful of the deceit of pride. And know that Jesus, who had the power to change water into wine (John 2.1-12) at Cana, has the power to change a heart of pride into a heart filled with humility. Furthermore, He can change a heart of stone into one of flesh.
Let us “Remember the Lord our God” knowing that it is by His grace that we have received every blessing and that we can live changed lives with His power.
How I pray for our country as I read this passage, for the shoe seems to fit!
