“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Jeremiah 2:13

How often do I forsake the Lord? How often do I think: this time He won’t be enough; surely He can’t provide this time; this time He will fail me.

Because I do not trust God’s character, because I do not take Him at His Word, I split at the first sign of adversity. I become determined to muscle through on my own – certain that I can figure this life out alone.

I run every which way, frantically searching for other cisterns, places, promises, or people to stake my hope in. Attractive at first, these shoddy cisterns always crack.

Why do they fail us every time?

Because God loves us. He loves us too much to let us become filled or satisfied by anything other than His “spring of living water.” He will do whatever it takes to call us back to Him, until we cry out to Him, helpless and totally free:

“My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:7-8

Total faith in Christ’s work on the Cross is the only cistern that will not fail us; the only place we can look to for peace and freedom; the only hope we have for salvation.
