Awaiting the Glory
by Madison Randolph

December 14, 2015, Monday –  Psalms 41, 52, 44; Zech. 1:7–17; Rev. 3:7–13;  Matt. 24:15–31
(ESV Daily Office Readings Online)

In this season of waiting, we are called to reflection and repentance. Father Laird mentioned in his sermon on December 6 about all the trials and tribulations that evil is inflicting on today’s society. Question: Is sin/ evil worse today than it’s ever been or does each generation carry that thinking and always see life worse than one’s before? Wars have plagued humans for centuries, genocides are committed, terrorist attacks, and unborn babies have no chance at life. And now, these babies are being slaughtered and body parts are sold.

David asks in Psalm 52: 1, “Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?” and he continues in v.3, “You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right.” This Psalm is about Doeg the Edomite, who worked for Saul, who at this time was pursuing David and his followers to kill them. Douglas Stuart, professor and author, states that these Psalms can be translated into our world by interjecting ourselves into the wording of the Psalms or as simply replacing enemy with “sin”.

This is our meditation during the season. Reflecting on Psalm 41, verse 4, we proclaim, “Lord be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.” But there is hope. The hope only God can provide. David trusted in the Lord, and so should I. He says, “The steadfast love of God endures all the day.” There is joy in this hope. Yesterday, we lit the pink candle on the Advent wreath, signifying the rejoice in the nearing of Christmas Day.

I await the glory. So, keep patiently waiting, keep reflecting, keep hoping, and rejoice in the coming of the Lord Jesus’s birth, resurrection, and the promise of the second coming.
